 Flumes title

Corrosion-Resistant Flumes for measuring flow in open channels.

Made of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), Plasti-Fab Flumes provide optimum corrosion resistance. Available in a wide range of functional designs and custom sizes, there's a Plasti-Fab flume for your specific need. For extremely severe effluents, they're also available in Vinyl Ester, stainless steel, or other special materials as required. Our representatives and engineering staff can assist you in identifying the perfect flume for your need.

Characteristics common to all flumes:

  • Accurate, Economical, Long Lasting - Fiberglass flumes are more rugged and cost less than stainless steel flumes, and they are more durable than concrete or galvanized flumes.
  • Rugged Construction - Most Plasti-Fab flumes are built with minimum 2" end and top flanges. Top spreaders are factory installed. Lightweight laminated foam ribs with a large cross section limit wall and floor deflection better than embedded angles.
  • Smooth White Gelcoat Surfaces minimize buildup of silt and organic debris, aid in reading the gage and instrument calibration, and make cleaning easier.
  • Easy Installation – Plasti-Fab flumes are heavily ribbed and braced for better dimensional stability and are equally effective as free-standing installations or as liners in concrete.
Parshall Flume
     Parshall Flumes
The most widely known flume and still the most widely used for permanent installations. Used in monitoring sewage, plant effluent and irrigation water. Available in sizes 1" through 12 foot.

Palmer-Bowlus Flume
Palmer-Bowlus Flumes
Known in the sanitary field where it is widely used for measuring flows in manholes, temporary installations or pipelines.

 Trapezoidal
  Trapezoidal Flumes
Originally an irrigation flume where it has been used to monitor flow in furrows and sloping-sided irrigation ditches. Small size trapezoidal flumes have a v-shaped throat, the bottom of which is at the same elevation as the channel invert - thus able to produce accurate readings at very low flows without the disadvantages of a v-notch or rectangular weir.

H-Flume
  H Flumes
The H-flumes have been introduced to the sanitary field by Plasti-Fab to measure effluent, sewage, or stormwater having a very wide range of flow that otherwise would be difficult or impossible to measure in other types of flumes. Flume must be installed with a free fall off the end.

Cutthroat Flume
  Cutthroat Flumes
Similar to the Parshall flume except that the bottom is at the same elevation as the channel invert throughout the length of the flume. The cutthroat flume's greatest advantage is in its use where head loss is limited.

   RBC and Step Flumes
The RBC and Step Flume or Broad Crested Weir comprise a group of long throated flumes that are increasingly being used for agricultural research, water shed management, runoff studies and water resource allocation. This family of flumes can be mathematically configured through the approach, throat and tailwater sections to provide accurate open channel flow monitoring for a wide range of shapes and sizes of natural and concrete flow channels.
