A massive Qatar aluminium plant was to be built in Mesaieed Industrial City. The Qatar aluminium plant, named Qatalum, would utilize fresh seawater for cooling purposes which meant that corrosion resistant fluid control equipment was called for. Qatar is mostly surrounded by water except for Saudi Arabia its only land boarder. Qatalum required a company with a minimum of 20 years of demonstrable experience designing, engineering, fabricating and directing the installation of large scale corrosion resistant fluid control equipment. This is where Plasti-Fab was able to come to the rescue.
Qatalum’s Qatar Aluminium Plant Picks Plasti-Fab
Plasti-Fab supplied nine large Heavy Duty Titeseal Slide Gates, four large Heavy Duty Downward Opening Weir Gates and 24 Heavy Duty Stop Logs with eight Guide Frames for the project.
According to Qatalum officials “Qatalum will be the largest primary aluminium plant ever built in one phase. It will be a fully-integrated primary aluminium plant consisting of a smelter, casthouse and carbon plant as well as a dedicated gas fired power plant with a capacity of approximately 1,350 MW. Qatalum, a joint venture by Qatar Petroleum and Hydro, will have a capacity in the first phase of 585,000 tonnes of primary aluminium annually, all to be shipped as value-added aluminium casthouse products. There are already plans to boost the production to 609,000 tonnes annually from 2013.”
This industrial city is located in a natural bay on the southern coast of the Qatar Eastern Peninsula, approximately 40 kilometers south of the capital, Doha.
